This is a good point to acknowledge that as digital transformation occurs we are seeing new roles co-existing in the office with Civil Engineers. The code I write tends to focus on being functional rather than beautifully written and efficient, and I’m sure this would be the case for the majority of Civil Engineers, especially those starting out with python. This is because it is one of the tools in our toolbox to solve engineering problems, and we are likely to write code to explore the problem, modifying it as we narrow in on a solution. You may note that I said that Civil Engineers are often likely to tinker with code. SETTING UP PYTHON ON MAC INSTALLYou can install directly from the link above. I am using MacOS, but I also have Jupyter Notebooks installed on my work Windows machine. It’s therefore really good for programming as a Civil Engineer, as we are often likely to ‘tinker’ with code, writing it in stages to get it doing what we need – for example to support a specific calculation or process on a specific project. The reason for this is that it lets you build up code in discrete sections, including seeing outputs for each section as you go. As I said in my previous post I will be using Jupyter Notebooks to write code.
